Social / Peer-Pressure Drinker
This cut-back plan helps you reduce drinking without disappearing from your social life. The strategy is to control defaults, timing, and exit points.
Note: If you begin drinking earlier, lose control, or notice withdrawal symptoms,
consider switching to a quit plan or consulting a clinician.
Step 1: Pre-decide your rules (before you go)
- Maximum number of drinks (e.g., 1–2)
- Drink type only (no shots / no rounds)
- Alternate every drink with water or NA option
- Set an exit time
Step 2: Control the first drink
Rule: The first drink sets the night.
Lower-risk starts
- NA beer/mocktail first
- Drink slowly with food
- Choose low-alcohol options
What to avoid
- Shots
- Rounds
- “Catching up” quickly
Step 3: Interrupt escalation
- Hold your glass during round orders
- Physically move seats after one drink
- Switch to NA after your limit
- Order your own drinks
Step 4: Plan your exit
Exit strategies
- Drive yourself
- Set a calendar alarm
- Use a pre-written exit text
Exit scripts
- “I’m heading out — early day tomorrow.”
- “I’m done for the night.”
- “Good seeing you — I’m off.”
Step 5: Review, don’t judge
- Did you stick to your rules?
- Where did pressure show up?
- What worked?
- What needs adjusting?
When cut-back stops working
- You regularly exceed limits
- Peer pressure overwhelms plans
- Drinking expands outside social settings
- Anxiety increases when limiting
If this happens, quitting may be simpler than constantly negotiating with pressure.
